Father and son team’s dioramas tell stories

Thomas Kelly and his son, Rob Kelly, are father and son, co-collectors, co-builders and best friends. Thomas lives in Baker, La., and Rob lives in Jackson, Mo., but even with over 500 miles between them, they co-built a diorama to show at the 2023 Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Mass.

“We have been building dioramas together for years,” Rob said. “In fact, the first diorama I built with Dad was in 2003 for a 1/87 Vehicle Club show in Pennsylvania. I was so little when we built this diorama, Dad did about 90% of the work. Today, all of our dioramas are roughly 2x4 feet. We currently have four 2x4 modules, a road paving module, two crane modules and a portable asphalt module.”
