Chris Steeb crafts emergency vehicle

9/16/2021

Chris Steeb, of Dexter, Mich., is a retired firefighter and two-state farmer, with farmland in both Oklahoma and Michigan. He is also a national farm display champion, so he is well-known in the model farming community, especially among readers of Toy Farmer magazine.
Approximately 90% of the buildings and farm equipment on Chris’ farm displays are scratch built by him. Working in both brass and styrene, Chris enjoys seeing his creations come to life.
“The best scratch-built piece I have made, at least so far, was the EZ Ration cattle feeder truck that I built for my Easy Farms display,” he said.
In the world of farm display contests, Chris has been called a “triple crown winner,” since he took first place in farm display contests at the Lafayette Farm Toy Show in March 2013, the National Farm Toy Show in November 2013 and the Gateway Mid-America Farm Toy Show in St. Louis, Mo., in February 2014, thus the title.

National Toy Truck ’N Construction Show was fun for all!

9/15/2021

The 31st Annual National Toy Truck 'N Construction Show was held Aug. 6-8 in Indianapolis, Ind. It’s been two years since the event was held in-person and it was good to see old friends again and meet new people in the hobby. Before I left home, I made a wish list of items I was hoping to see and purchase at the show, agreed to a budget with my wife, and was ready to go.
The show was a little smaller this year due to pandemic concerns and restrictions, but it was still just as enjoyable. If you have never been to this show, it is unlike any other. Yes, there were lots of vendors offering a large variety of model trucks, construction equipment and parts for sale, but the show also included elements and activities you won’t experience anywhere else.

Gerhard Klarwasser traversed across the world and had a successful career before starting a business, overcoming many challenges along the way. After becoming a distributor of die-cast car and truck models, he became aware of a void in the market for American fire truck models, and decided to produce his own line of die-cast fire trucks under the Ashton Models name.
Starting in Germany
Born and raised in Leipzig, Germany, Gerhard was part of a loving family, but had a challenging childhood. After World War II, living in what was then East Germany was not easy.
“It was a terrible time,” Gerhard says. “Starvation was widespread, electrical outages were common, coal was rationed so heat was a problem, and there were very few toys.”
Gerhard says the family received care packages from relatives in the United States. “These care packages included food we could not buy in stores, and these packages would bring a little enjoyment when they arrived. This is how I tasted peanut butter for the first time,” he shares.

Sept. 11, 2001, is a day that will live in infamy. On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.
