Travis Messersmith, of Fairmount, Ind., has been a volunteer firefighter for the Mill Township Fire Department for nearly half of his 33 years. “My dad, Troy, and brother, Cale, were both volunteer firemen, and when I turned 18, I followed in their footsteps,” Travis said. Travis’s day jobs are driving a dump truck for the Grant County Highway Department and owner of Midwest Model Works. “Apparently, I was born to serve other people,” he said. “All three of my jobs are service-oriented. I’m also lucky that my boss, David White, the superintendent of the highway department, is an assistant fire chief himself. He understands the complex and time-demanding job of a firefighter, so there is never a conflict when a fire dispatch call comes in.” |
