 Click to view electronic issue. | To pay tribute to our first responders, we are showcasing some of the replicas that have been produced of the equipment they utilize every day. While this heroism pertains to every city in our country, we are focusing this feature on the FDNY, Fire Department of New York. This is the largest municipal fire department in the United States, and the second largest in the world after Japan’s Tokyo Fire Department. The FDNY employs roughly 11,000 uniformed firefighters, over 4,000 emergency medical technicians (EMT’s) and more than 2,000 civilian workers. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, 18 percent of the city’s EMT’s had caught the virus, along with a large percentage of firefighters. Sadly, many did not survive. It has brought back memories of 9/11, when 412 first responders lost their lives; 343 of them were firefighters.
