Collector still dreams in CAT yellow

David Ludgin, Bonita Springs, Fla., collects Caterpillar scale models, but Ludgin is more than a collector. He is also a storyteller.

When asked if he played with construction toys as a child, he shared this story: “I grew up in the Chicago area, and I played with construction toys all the time. My favorite toy manufacturer was Nylint. I remember when I was 8 or 9 years old, my mother took me to Rockford, Ill., to visit the Nylint plant. I was hoping to come home with a toy, but Nylint did not have a store at its plant. The man who gave us a tour of the plant did give me a wheel from one of the toys being built on the assembly line. I clutched the wheel in my young hand and marveled at the world Nylint had just opened up for me.”
