It is difficult to believe this will already be my last column for 2019. Time has seemed to fly by this year. I’ve been looking back over the past year of events in our hobby, just to perhaps sum it all up. With First Gear purchasing Die-Cast Promotions last year, it seems to be moving forward, blending the two lines of 1/64 scale trucks. While First Gear has a large collector base buying its products, it still depends on large commercial accounts to keep things going. Many die-cast truck companies, of the past, learned the hard way that you cannot depend on the collectors market alone to stay in business. Recently, I was doing some work for a large construction company that has an impressive die-cast truck and construction equipment display in its office. Some of the collection consisted of some unique First Gear United Rentals models. I checked out eBay and found that United Rentals has had quite a few 1/34 scale First Gear models produced and has become a very good First Gear customer. United Rentals has the largest fleet of rental equipment for the construction industry in the world. It presently has more than 660,000 pieces of equipment. Its equipment includes everything you can imagine for a job site, such as portable lighting, commercial generators, pumps, scissor lifts, boom lifts, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, air compressors, porta-potties and full portable restrooms and showers. It also rents commercial tools, such as core drills, concrete saws and other specialty tools. This is actually just a sample of what the company rents. |
